Shared and active transport
To slash climate pollution from transport and save families from high and rising petrol bills, we need to rethink how Aussies get around. Giving more people the option to walk, ride, take the bus or hop on a tram for more of their daily trips is our biggest opportunity now for cleaner and better transport. Together with electric vehicles, shared and active transport is the key to cleaning up a large and growing source of pollution which is poisoning our air and harming our climate.
Aussies want more choice and better ways to get around, but at the moment only half of the 15 million people living in our five biggest cities have access to good, all-day public transport. We don’t want to be stuck in the car everyday, but often we don’t have any other choice.
So at the Climate Council, we’re catalysing action and investment that can boost shared and active transport options for Aussies living in our biggest cities. We use impactful research, engaging public campaigns and our powerful direct advocacy to make the case and spotlight the key opportunities to deliver cleaner, cheaper ways of getting around now. And together with you, we’re building momentum by amplifying the call from Aussies right around the country who want better access to great shared and active transport.

What is shared and active transport, and why does it matter?
Transport is Australia’s second largest source of climate pollution, and road transport, like cars and trucks, makes up 83% of this. For decades, governments have prioritised private cars. The result is that, too often, people have no other way to get around. So, what can we do about it?
