Call on the Federal Government to end the free ride for fossil fuels!

Meanwhile, the rest of us are left footing the climate damages bill.

Higher insurance premiums, spiralling costs for imported fuel, and billions in disaster recovery from worsening fires, floods and heatwaves are among the costs of fossil fuel pollution we pay, and they hit harder every year.

But while everyday Australians tighten their belts, highly polluting coal, oil and gas corporations are raking in record profits and pocketing billions in government subsidies, leaving everyday Australians to pick up the tab for the climate damage.

It’s time for that to change.

Right now, decisions are being made that will determine whether fossil fuel corporations keep getting a free ride at our expense, or whether they are held to account.

This is the moment to make our voices heard.

Join our call for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and key Federal Ministers to stand up to fossil fuel corporations and protect the interests of all Australians:

That means:

  1. Stop approving new coal and gas projects,1 and instead use your approval powers to protect Australians from corporate greed driving climate harm, and accelerate the shift to cheaper, cleaner, home-grown renewable energy.
  2. Strengthen Australia’s industrial pollution law, the Safeguard Mechanism,2 so our big polluters can no longer exploit loopholes and offsets to dodge and delay the pollution cuts needed to reduce climate harm.
  3. Cap the diesel fuel tax handout to big mining corporations,3 and invest those savings to support Australian communities and industries with the switch to cleaner, more secure energy.

The fossil fuel industry has had a free ride for too long. It’s time the Federal Government made fossil fuel corporations pull their weight, clean up their act, and stop rewarding them for causing harm.

The Climate Council will deliver this petition and your messages to the Prime Minister, the Treasurer, other relevant Ministers, and key decision-makers in government.
