Emissions from Australia’s biggest polluters

The Safeguard Mechanism is one of Australia’s most important laws to cut climate pollution. It covers 215 facilities, which are responsible for about a third of Australia’s climate pollution, including many of our biggest polluters (like coal mines and gas projects).

The Safeguard Mechanism is intended to drive down climate pollution from big polluters over time. While we have seen some small cuts in pollution in the first year of the new rules, there are some major loopholes which mean big polluters can get away with continuing to release millions of tonnes of climate pollution far into the future.Read more: Analysis showsthat the fossil fuel industry is undermining the Safeguard Mechanism, increasing climate pollution, and putting more Australians at risk of climate harm.
