While fossil fuel projects are a significant source of pollution in Australia, most of the pollution from our fossil fuel projects actually occurs overseas. Australia is the world’s third-largest fossil fuel exporter. The pollution from our fossil fuels burned overseas harms Australians by heating the global climate and exacerbating extreme weather events.
Our fossil gas exports are also sending power bills through the roof, as gas companies export the vast majority of Australia’s gas for eye-watering profits, at the expense of Australian families and businesses.
Starting a managed decline of coal and gas exports would see Australia take control of our energy and export future. We can build up clean industries with a bright future over the years ahead, as we sensibly scale down these highly polluting, declining ones.
