Let’s go! Call on the Government to power past its 2035 climate target

Update: 29 September 2024*

The lower end of this target falls dangerously short of what’s needed to protect Australians and our way of life. In the face of catastrophic risks, this is too timid for the times.1

The top end of this range (70%) is closer to what’s needed to protect Australians and a bigger step up in effort – if it’s backed up by strong policies, credible plans and genuine investment.

Australians want decisive action. Now’s the time to push the Government to ensure 70% is a floor, not a ceiling.

Join our call for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate Minister Chris Bowen to deliver and power past Australia’s 70% 2035 climate target.

That means:

  1. Back the target with improved existing policies and powerful new ones to slash climate pollution in the coming decade.
  2. Schedule regular review opportunities to ratchet up climate action as new technology develops.
  3. Contribute to global efforts to slash climate pollution, by supporting new clean industries – like renewables and green metals – and phasing out fossil fuel exports.
  4. Plan for disasters we cannot avoid, including costed strategies to protect or relocate Australians facing severe climate impacts.

We are the last generation with the power to tackle the climate crisis. This is our chance to protect what we love and secure a safer future for generations to come.

Together, we can show that Australians support stronger climate action – and we have the people power to make our voices heard. Let’s make it count!

*About this update:
This petition originally called on the Government to set the strongest possible 2035 climate target – and to take urgent action to meet it. Now that the target has been announced, we’ve updated this page to reflect that the focus is now on powering past it.

The petition remains open. The Climate Council will continue to ensure your voices are heard by key decision-makers as they design the policies and plans to reach this target. We’ll continue to share new petition signatures with the Prime Minister and the Minister for Climate Change and Energy as the petition hits key milestones.

On 10 September, before the target was set, the Climate Council delivered the first 19,000 signatures to the Government. By the time the target was announced on 18 September, a total of 21,164 people had signed.

CALL ON THE GOVERNMENT TO SET THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE 2035 CLIMATE TARGET – AND TAKE URGENT ACTION TO MEET IT

The Federal Government is due to set Australia’s 2035 climate target by September – a decision that will shape the future of every Australian.

A stronger target will protect Australians from worsening climate disasters, unlock economic opportunities in clean industries, and enhance our regional security.

A weaker target means more destructive climate extremes, more economic disruption, and catastrophic impacts on communities and ecosystems.1

But setting a target alone isn’t enough. It must be backed by strong policies, credible plans and real investment – to cut climate pollution this decade and prepare for the impacts we’re already facing.

Join our call for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate Minister Chris Bowen to set the strongest possible 2035 climate target – and take urgent action to meet it. That means:

  1. Set the 2035 climate target as close to net zero as possible to protect Australians from the most significant risks of the climate crisis.
  2. Back that target with improved existing policies and powerful new ones to slash climate pollution in the coming decade.
  3. Schedule regular review opportunities to ratchet up climate action as new technology develops.
  4. Contribute to global efforts to slash climate pollution, by supporting new clean industries – like renewables and green metals – and phasing out fossil fuel exports.
  5. Plan for disasters we cannot avoid, including costed strategies to protect or relocate Australians facing severe climate impacts.

If you believe the Government must go further and faster to protect Australians and slash climate pollution by 2035 – please add your name today.

When you sign, you’ll have the option to share why climate action matters to you. We’ll pass your message to key decision-makers – to show that behind every signature is a real person calling for urgent change. Your stories will be heard in Parliament, in meetings, and in conversations with those in power.

This is a critical moment to influence a decade-defining decision. Please sign and share this petition today.

We are the last generation with the power to tackle the climate crisis. This is our chance to protect what we love and secure a safer future for generations to come.

Together, we can show that Australians support strong climate action – and we have the people power to make our voices heard. Let’s make it count!

The Climate Council will deliver this petition to the Prime Minister, Minister Bowen and key decision-makers in government.
