Right now, the Federal Government is drafting new laws that will decide how data centres are built and powered in Australia. There are already 225 proposed data centres planned in Australia – and we have until 9 October to make our voices heard!
Many of us have important concerns about data centres – and energy usage is a big one. If data centres use power from the main energy grid without adding new renewables, they’ll drive up the use of polluting and expensive coal and gas.
That’s why the Government must require data centres to meet their energy needs by bringing on their own renewable power.
We’ve got the solutions – in our open letter, we’ve laid out five recommendations to show the Government what they need to do to manage the climate risks of the data centre boom.

Submissions on the Government’s consultation paper are open until 9 October, with legislation expected to follow in the months ahead. The Climate Council is currently developing a detailed submission that we will submit and publish soon.
