Raising cattle and sheep for meat and dairy is the main source of agricultural emissions (about 80%). Right now, there are fewer proven and scalable technologies to cut climate pollution from livestock. There are some promising emerging solutions, like feeding cows native seaweed that reduces the amount of methane they produce.
In the coming years, cutting emissions from agriculture will become a high priority as this sector will make up a far larger share of Australia’s remaining climate pollution. It’s important we lay the groundwork now with research and development on the solutions and technologies that will be needed in the years to come.
