Reducing and managing waste

The waste sector is a modest but important source of greenhouse gases in Australia  – and one with a straightforward solution. The majority of greenhouse gas emissions from waste are released when organic waste (like food and garden waste) decomposes in landfill, a process which releases methane.

Reducing food waste is the top priority. For food and garden organic (FOGO) waste that can’t be avoided, ensuring it doesn’t end up in landfill by processing it in other ways can reduce climate pollution, while also creating useful products like bioenergy and nutrient-rich compost.

By expanding FOGO collection and ensuring people use their FOGO bins effectively. Separating general waste from recyclables is now standard around the country, but less than 40% of local governments also provide a dedicated FOGO collection and recycling service.
