Andrew Watkins

Councillor

Dr. Andrew Watkins is an Adjunct Professor (Practice) at Monash University’s School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment. His passion is matching world class climate science with clear communication to build everyone’s climate intelligence and Australia’s climate resilience. Andrew’s PhD studied Antarctic sea ice and its impact on global weather and climate.

He joined the Bureau of Meteorology in 1999 and was the Bureau’s Head of Climate Prediction for over a decade, before stepping across to the Australian Climate Service in 2023 as a Lead Author of Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment, delivered in 2025. 

He is widely published on climate risk issues, has won a number of peer awards for his climate work, served on several United Nations expert teams on climate, and in 2025 was elected a Fellow of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society in recognition of his career contribution to climate services.
