The Climate Council has welcomed the news that the Northern Territory government wants to adopt a target of net zero emissions by 2050.

The NT is now going through a public consultation process, but if the target is officially adopted it will mean that all Australian states and territories will have net zero emissions targets.  

“It’s good to see the Northern Territory moving in the right direction,” said the Climate Council’s Head of Research, Dr Martin Rice.

“Australia’s states and territories are leading the way on climate action in the absence of any leadership from the Federal Government,” he said.

The Climate Council produces an annual report analysing the climate performance of each state and territory. 

“The ‘States Renewables Race’ report has always placed the NT at the back of the pack. Today’s announcement suggests the Territory may now be serious about joining the race,” said Dr Rice.

“The new clean economy presents tremendous opportunities for the NT because it has some of the best solar resources in the world,” he said.

“The Territory is also exploring its potential to export renewable energy to neighbours including Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Singapore,” he said. 

“The Climate Council is hopeful today’s announcement leads to real action. The Council also implores the NT government to transition away from gas. As a fossil fuel, it is incompatible with achieving net zero emissions and effectively tackling climate change,” said Dr Rice.
