DATA from the International Energy Agency (IEA) has found investment in renewable energy and storage technologies is surging around the world, while investment in coal continues to plummet.
Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie warned the Federal Government that it would be a grave mistake to water down the Clean Energy Target proposed by Australia’s Chief Scientist Alan Finkel.
“The latest Government thought bubble to use hundreds of millions of dollars to briefly extend the life of a crumbling old coal fired power station is unnecessary and hugely expensive. The rest of the world must be rolling their eyes as they get on with building the future – more renewable power.”
“Australia’s number one problem is a lack of supply. All energy experts agree that bringing on new renewable energy is the best way to reduce rising power prices. It’s undeniable that renewable energy is now the cheapest source of new generation.”
“Everyday the Government delays implementing a Clean Energy Target is another missed opportunity to encourage investment in new renewable energy, create jobs, push down energy prices and reduce pollution.”
“This Government has had four years to tackle energy and climate policy. Unfortunately, their policy is as clapped out as the old coal-fired power stations they’re fighting to keep open.”
McKenzie labelled reports that the Federal Government will look to redesign the Finkel Review’s Clean Energy Target as a blatant attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of Australians.
“You can call it what you want, but any change to the Clean Energy Target that includes any form of coal, is simply not a clean energy target at all.
“This will do nothing to tackle Australia’s rising pollution levels and worsening climate change. In fact, the CET will instead become the Dirty Energy Target. It would be a disgrace”.
