For a long time, Aussies have been stuck paying too much for fuel and suffering from pollution because of big auto manufacturers dumping their dirtiest cars here. Unlike most other rich countries, Australia didn’t have fuel efficiency standards forcing manufacturers to clean up their act by selling cleaner and more efficient cars – like EVs.

In 2022, Climate Council set out to change that. Over two years, we drove a major national campaign to cap pollution from new cars, and make manufacturers give Aussie drivers more choice in low and zero emission vehicles. We went head to head with the big auto industry; moved arm in arm with the Australian community; and sat face to face with decision makers to help deliver this huge reform that had been left by the side of the road for too long.

Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard is now set to halve pollution from new cars by the end of the decade while delivering huge savings at the petrol pump. And it’s going to make electric vehicles far more available and affordable, giving Aussies more choice the next time they buy a new car.

We couldn’t have done it without you! Find out more about how we helped deliver Australia’s first ever caps on pollution from our cars, here.
