Heatwaves kill more Australians than any other extreme weather event, and young children are one of the most at-risk groups due to a reduced ability to regulate their core body temperature.
These risks are on the rise as climate change continues to increase the intensity and frequency of heatwaves in Australia.
As hundreds of thousands of students return to school this week, we've created a poster with tips on what teachers can do to keep children safe during a heatwave at school.
The tips include training children in heat safety, modifying class schedules to avoid exertion during the hottest parts of the day and ensuring children have easy access to water. You can download the A3 poster here, and the A4 handout here.
