The Climate Council is on the search for a dedicated People and Culture Manager to support our rapidly growing team. You will work across the organisation to recruit, retain and enable great people to do their best work. Reporting directly to the COO, this is a new role and an exciting opportunity to join the Climate Council as we build out our people and culture strategy.

The Climate Council of Australia is Australia’s leading climate change communications organisation. We provide authoritative, expert advice to the Australian public and key decision-makers on climate change and solutions based on the most up-to-date science available. Climate Council was founded in 2013 by thousands of Australians to create a new, independent and 100% community-funded organisation in response to the abolition of the Australian Climate Commission.

About the Role
The Manager, People and Culture is responsible for human resource operations at the Climate Council. You provide advice to and support the Management Team on a range of HR matters, and lead and implement projects that support the Climate Council to recruit, retain and enable great people to do their best work. The Manager, People and Culture will also contribute to workforce development planning to align the Climate Council’s people strategy with its organisational strategy during a period of rapid growth.
This is a hands on role; you will be the “go-to” person for all HR related activities. To be successful you must be passionate about creating a performance and values driven culture. You will also be a good communicator, building and maintaining authentic relationships with team members and external stakeholders.
Reporting
The People and Culture Manager reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and works as part of the wider Operations Team. The Manager, People and Culture, also works closely with members of the Climate Council Management Team. The Manager, People and Culture has no direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of the Manager, People and Culture include:
- HR Strategy – contribute to the development of HR strategies and initiatives that support the Climate Council to deliver its strategy.
- HR operations – responsible for management and delivery of HR services to the business including recruitment, performance, talent & development, reward & recognition and change & transition.
- HR records – maintain employee records, generating contracts and other HR paperwork as needed.
- HR advice – research issues and develop solutions to resolve strategic business HR issues, and support and advise managers in a wide range of employee relations matters.
- Training and development – proactively identify opportunities to upskill Climate Council managers in all areas of people management.
- Policies and procedures – maintain and develop HR policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with legislation and as required by the business.
- Payroll support – issue accurate and timely information to the Finance Team.
- Reporting and analysis – preparation of HR reports and analysis of trends for Management and the Board when required, including in relation to HR risks.
- Team culture and engagement – in consultation with the COO, identify and implement activities to improve team culture and engagement.
- Projects – in consultation with the COO, undertake and/or engage external technical specialists to undertake HR projects (e.g. award evaluation and mapping).
- Contribute positively to the Climate Council culture and act in accordance with Climate Council values.
Experience and Skills
- At least 5 years’ experience leading a HR function or able to demonstrate a readiness based on background and experience
- Demonstrated understanding of contemporary human resources issues and knowledge of HR practices & employment law including workers’ compensation and WHS
- Ability to coach others, including senior team members, on HR issues (e.g. performance management, developing effective teams and effective work systems, KPI setting)
- Experience in performance management, conflict resolution, disciplinary processes, and workplace investigation
- Experience working with HRIS platforms
- Experience in the development and implementation of learning and leadership programs
- Project and/or change management experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including policy and report preparation
- Confidence troubleshooting and problem-solving; you have the ability to make decisions when needed, with a solutions mindset.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to record keeping in all aspects of work
Qualifications
- A tertiary qualification, preferably in Human Resources or business
