Australia is in the midst of a renewable energy and storage boom – but the current Australian Federal Government’s proposed climate and energy policy risks derailing it, threatening clean energy and jobs.
The Turnbull Government’s proposed National Energy Guarantee (NEG), would set a woefully inadequate greenhouse gas reduction target for the electricity sector, at just 26% below 2005 levels by 2030 – when what we need is a target of at least 60%. This will do little to drive new investment in renewable energy or tackle climate change for years to come.
In fact, with its woefully low emissions target, the proposed NEG could be worse than doing nothing at all.
But we cannot switch off: Australians must demand a credible climate and energy policy that embraces renewable energy and storage, while transitioning away from ageing, polluting and inefficient fossil fuels.
As Australia’s biggest polluter, the electricity sector is also our biggest opportunity to act on climate. Quickly and deeply cutting greenhouse gas pollution from fossil fuels is our best chance to limit global warming and worsening extreme weather events.
And while it is already clear that a majority of Australians want more renewable energy, with nearly six in ten picking solar as their preferred energy source (1), the nation needs political action to back public attitudes.
The time is now to demand that our leaders take effective, meaningful action on climate: on the 10th of August, Federal, State and Territory energy ministers will convene at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), to finalise aspects of the proposed NEG.
That means we have just weeks to convince key decision-makers of the evidence-based case for ambitious emissions reductions in the electricity sector.
Sign this petition to urge your state or territory energy minister to support the continued rollout of renewable energy and to demand higher emission reduction targets for the electricity sector.
We have just weeks to determine Australia’s energy future.
Add your name to this petition today, and together, let’s make sure our Federal, State and Territory Governments get this right.

I demand a credible climate and energy policy that:
• Sets ambitious emissions reduction targets in the electricity sector
• Embraces renewable energy and storage
• Transitions away from ageing, polluting and inefficient fossil fuels
• Effectively tackles climate change
