No New Coal Mines: A public talk with the President of Kiribati

17.11.15 By

Chief Climate Councillor Tim Flannery will be speaking in Melbourne on Thursday night at an important Australia Institute event, featuring His Excellency Anote Tong, President of Kiribati as the guest of honour.

Put simply, if Australia succeeds in its plans to double its coal exports, the world’s plans to tackle global warming will fail.

President Tong has stopped in Australia en-route to Paris COP21 to make a final call for a global moratorium on new coal mines, discuss the need for urgent action at the climate talks, what success could look like, and the very real consequences for our Pacific Island neighbours and our global community if we don’t.

Also speaking at the event are Blair Palese, CEO of 350.org; and Adrian Burragubba of the Wangan & Jagalingou Family Council.

The event will also be MC’d by Kirsty Albion, National Director of AYCC, and Amelia Telford, National Director of Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network.
